MOTORWAY IN HUNGARY

Netavis iCAT Traffic analyses traffic and detects dangerous situations on one of Hungary’s most important motorways.

CHALLENGE

The motorway, closely linked to the European transit and travel network, is one of Hungary’s busiest highways. With 173 km, 17 intersections and nine rest places it carries 30 to 40 thousand vehicles per day, which leaves only an aver-age of 2 seconds between two cars.

The highway’s administration is looking for a flexible visual traffic monitoring which is capable of providing reliable data despite a broad spectrum of environmental conditions such as low light, bad weather, reflections and other difficult circumstances. The system should complement the existing traffic control system, be efficient in the use of bandwidth and server performance and support the traffic monitoring operators in their daily work significantly.

SOLUTION

The professional IP-based video management platform Netavis Observer with seamlessly integrated video analytics iCAT is managing five camera servers with a total of 110 cameras for full time recording, 24/7 live monitoring and 24/7 video analytics.

While two traffic monitoring operators are provided with two 42” monitors each for an overview of the main lanes and two 21” monitors as work & alarm windows, iCAT Traffic constantly analyses the video content in the background. One of the main features of iCAT Traffic assesses the speed and density of vehicles on the lanes. Traffic jams and other traffic patterns are thereby automatically detected, operators can immediately initiate appropriate actions. Additionally, Stopped Vehicle Detection notifies in case a vehicle stops on predefined areas such as emergency or exit lanes. Wrong Way Detection alerts in the event of vehicles driving in the wrong direction.

BENEFIT

As experience shows, operators do not constantly supervise the screens due to the huge number of events presented by the overall traffic monitoring systems and hundreds of vehicles passing by per hour. The advanced alarm handling options of Netavis Observer allow for an automatic distinction between warnings and alarms. Due to the elaborate video analytics algorithms and the high accuracy of Netavis iCAT Traffic, false alarms are kept to a minimum. Both enable operators to focus on what’s important, at the same time they are more comfortable in quick decision making processes as they can visually verify critical situations on the alarm screens. The operator can rearrange control processes as per real needs and last but not least the staff working along the motorway is taking more care following safety and other operation rules due to the operating video surveillance.
